September ’11 Prayer Letter

Dear Praying Friends,

July and August seem to have flown by.  We have been staying busy in ministry work.  I have had more opportunities to preach lately and I praise the Lord for it.

A very exciting answer to prayer came at the end of July.  After spending most of the month in research and preparation for our visas, the Lord worked in the hearts of the bureaucrats and they approved our 1 year visas.  Now that we know how the system works and what is expected, it should be a little easier next year.  We hope!

This week while walking the streets near the church and passing out tracks, two men asked my Nepali friend, “How much will you pay us to come to church?”  In their minds, the only reason that Nepalis go to church or become Christians is for money.  We gave them the gospel, but it was hard for them to dismiss what they had believed for so long.  This is one of the obstacles we face here in Nepal.  Please pray that the Lord will work in their hearts and minds!

We are finishing up with monsoon season here and the days are getting sunnier and hotter.   The major Hindu holiday season will be starting soon.  We are told that this will mean less traffic on the roads!
Timothy is running around charming everyone.  He has started trying to sing with us at church, but the only singing that we can understand from him so far is “E-I-E-I-O” when we sing “Old McDonald.”(Such a spiritual song!)

The last month had been a bit rough healthwise.  My language tutor got the typhoid and had to take several weeks off.  At the same time, I came down with a cold that has lasted more than three weeks.  Please pray that I get over this soon! We thank you all so much for your continued faithfulness in prayer and financial support.

July 2011 Update

Dear Praying Friends,

June has been another busy month.  The family we are working with here in Nepal, had to head back to the states for a short time to help their pastor.  This means that there are two major changes for us.  First, we will be now be hearing more uninterpreted Nepali preaching and teaching.  Secondly, we will have a greater role in the ministry in their absence.  More opportunities for service!  We are sad to see them leave(temporarily), but excited to step up to the bat!

This past month, I have been working hard to prepare all the necessary paperwork to secure our long-term(1yr.) visas.  We have made much progress since last month, but there is still much to be done.  There are no set or written requirements.  We just need enough paperwork to convince the government official.  Our plan is to give him a stack of references, recommendations, etc so tall that they can’t turn us down and won’t try to demand a bribe.  Please pray that all the paperwork comes together quickly and that the official will look kindly upon our application.

We had a wonderful 4th of July!  The monsoon rains let up for the day and we had beautiful weather as we grilled buffalo burgers and chicken “hot dogs” and enjoyed fellowship with some of our American friends.  The weather alone was a miracle!  We had not seen the sun in several days  and the following day was right back to the normal heavy rains.

Timothy is taking his first few steps on his own and scaring us with his climbing ability.  This month, we realized that he has now lived in Nepal longer than in the US.  The Nepali people love to make him smile.  As we walk down the road, complete strangers make clicking or smooching sounds with their mouths in an attempt to get Timothy to smile at them.

Please continue to pray for our language skills and Grace’s health.  We thank you all so much for your continued faithfulness in prayer and financial support.
